Welcome!
Whether you are studying the seasons, insects, needs of plants and animals, weather, oceans, or your community, 'dear world' will serve as a wonderful model to encourage student writing. Teachers are invited to have their students write their own 'dear world' letter as a class using a format similar to that in the Dear World book. The completed poems should be free form poems, collections of thoughts or ideas about a topic.

Participants
The 'dear world' project is designed for students in Grade One through Grade Six.

Objectives for Students
•To develop reading and writing skills
•To enjoy and develop an appreciation of poetry
•To celebrate student work by publishing it on the 'dear world' web site
•To develop technology skills and understandings
•To have students contribute to a telecollaborative project
•To participate as part of an online community

Publishing of Class Work
Classes registered with the 'dear world' project will have one class poem on a chosen subject published on the project web site. Classes are welcome to submit one illustration as a jpeg file with their writing. Writing should be submitted as a Word document or as text in an email.

Teaching Suggestions
•It is recommended that teachers share the Dear World book with their students if participating in this project.
•Using the book as a model, have students contribute ideas to a class letter or poem on a chosen topic.
•Individually have students write a letter to the chosen subject. Select a line from each letter to include in one class letter.
•Have students choose a subject as a class. Have them work in pairs to write their own short letter or poem and then collectively put student thoughts together to create one complete piece of writing. Edit as a class adding more descriptive language etc.
•Have younger students dictate their thoughts to older students and have the older students organize the class poem.
•Teach the students about collages. Have the class create a class collage or individual collages to go with their writing.
•Teach students how to use KidPix or Paint and have them create an illustration to go with their writing.
•Create a class book entitled 'dear world' and include individual pieces of student writing and art.
•Create a class PowerPoint presentation entitled 'dear world' and include individual pieces of student writing and art. Present this to other classes, parents, or at an Earth Day assembly.
