"A child's world is full of beauty ~ the colors of autumn leaves, the taste of fresh apples, the cheerful rhythm of Mom's footsteps in the morning. Each day offers new discoveries, new emotions, and always something new to celebrate. Takayo Noda celebrates our dear world and inspires us to observe each detail with imagination and hope." (inside book cover)

Dear World is a wonderful collection of short poems using the voice of a child. The poems begin with a salutation and continue with expressions of curiosity, wonder, and thoughts about the world. Takayo Noda has illustrated her book by using intricate bright and colorful cut-paper and watercolor collages.

Teachers are invited to have their students write their own 'dear world' poem as a class using a format similar to that in the Dear World book. Whether students are studying the seasons, insects, needs of plants and animals, weather, oceans, or community, 'dear world' will work wonderfully as a model to encourage student writing. Please click here for further ideas and information about this project.

This project is designed for students in grades one through six and will run from December 2003 through to May 2004.
